Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UO Smart Beam Laser?
The UO Smart Beam Laser is the world’s smallest LCOS-based HD laser projector. Created by United Object, a subsidiary of SK Telecom, it is a pico projector that has a native real HD resolution created using advanced laser-based LCOS technology, all contained in an impossibly small 2.2” cube (that's about half an inch larger than a golf ball!).
What is the UO Smart Beam Laser NX BB10?
The UO Smart Beam Laser is the world’s smallest LCOS-based HD laser/LED hybrid projector. It's new for 2016 and features a revolutionary hybrid laser + LED hybrid projection engine, capable of producing an unbelievable 200 lumens. It also now features bluetooth connectivity!
What separates it from other pico, or mini, projectors?
The UO Smart Beam Laser series uses laser diodes, rather than the typical LED-type bulb of typical pico projectors. The NX BB10 features a revolutionary hybrid engine. The advanced laser engine allows for focus-free viewing, while the NX can used without focusing +/- 15 inches. This means that the projected image to stay sharp without the need of a clumsy focus motor or dial, even when projecting on uneven surfaces or multiple planes. Laser projectors also tend to have a higher perceived brightness when compared to last generation LED mini projectors of similar lumens rating.
Do I have to leave the UO Smart Beam Laser plugged in to operate, or can it run off battery?
The UO Smart Beam Laser includes a high capacity Li-Po 4200 mAh battery that can operate for two hours on a full charge for the original and 80 minutes on the UO Smart Beam NX BB10. It will operate while plugged in as well, but the battery may take longer to fully charge.
How big does the screen get?
The screen is technically rated to be as big as 100" from six feet away. If a massive eight foot screen isn't big enough for you and you step back to make it a bit bigger, we won't tell anyone. Promise.
Is the laser diode in the UO Smart Beam Laser safe to use?
Yes, of course! The UO Smart Beam Laser uses a Class 1 laser, the safest rating for lasers. This means that the UO Smart Beam Laser is safe for use under all normal conditions. Like any strong light, however, it is recommended that users take basic precautions when using the product and avoid staring directly into the light source.
How many lumens does the projector output?
Max 200 ANSI lumens for the NX BB10.
NOTE: A laser diode, like the one used in the UO Smart Beam Laser, will have much higher perceived brightness when compared to an LED pico projector of the same lumens rating. In other words, try it out — you'll be surprised.
What's this deal with the lumens rating and lasers?
If you've ever used a laser pointer, you know that the resultant dot is very bright, but the light is mostly isolated to the area of that dot. The point does not create much ambient light reflection all over the room. A flashlight, on the other hand, will have a lot of ambient light bouncing around, illuminating things that are outside of the beam of light.
The ANSI (American National Standards Institute) lumens test is a very specific test designed to accurately measure the light output by looking at the amount of light reflected off a screen. It's a great gauge of brightness for typical bulb-type projectors, but since it measures the reflection of light, it does not translate well for lasers . This means that even though we've put a competent 60 lumens into such a small package, it will seem far brighter than an LED projector of similar lumens!
What is the UO Smart Beam Laser compatibility?
The UO Smart Beam Laser features a micro-HDMI port for wired connection to many of your favorite devices. This means that it is compatible with most MHL and HDMI-enabled devices out of the box without the need for any additional software. It also works wirelessly with many mobile devices that are Screen Mirroring or Media Cast enabled.
The NX now also features a micro SD card slot, so it can be used on its own.
How do I connect the UO Smart Beam Laser to my devices?
Screen Mirroring (Android)
What options do I have for audio on the UO Smart Beam Laser?
The UO Smart Beam Laser features a 1W speaker inside the device which can be used for audio on-the-go. External speakers can be used by connecting the audio from the source device to the external audio device. We love pairing our devices up with a bluetooth speaker for an on-the-go cinema experience.
Does the UO Smart Beam Laser get hot after prolonged use? How loud is the internal fan?
The UO Smart Beam Laser will get warm during normal use, but should not get exceedingly hot, even with prolonged periods of use. The UO Smart Beam Laser uses a small, internal fan for cooling that emits a soft hum, but is generally regarded to be quieter than the average laptop. Sufficient ventilation is recommended, however.
How do I turn off the UO Smart Beam Laser?
Hold the power button until the project displays “shutting down” on the screen - about 3 seconds.
How can I reset my device?
To reset the device, use a thin object, such as a paperclip, and insert it into the small, round hole in the back of the device on the side opposite the lens.
Can the micro-USB slot be used as a video input?
No, the micro-USB input is only used for charging. Use the MHL/HDMI port on the opposite side in order to input video.
My projector is blurry/washed out/won't focus etc
It is likely your problems are a result of a defective unit and you may be eligible for an exchange or repair.
Does the UO Smart Beam Laser come with a warranty?
Yes, the UO Smart Beam Laser comes with a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with the UO Smart Beam Laser's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser. UO Smart Beam Laser's published guidelines include, but are not limited to, information contained in technical specifications, user manuals and service communications.
